Make Do and Mend with DIY

Posted by Deborah Read on in Home and Garden

The recession has seen an increase in the number of people taking up DIY. House price crashes, lack of money and uncertain career futures have all seen people turn to DIY in a bid to fall back in love with their homes. Instead of moving house, people are redecorating kitchens, adding shelves and storage space or even adding an extension all in the bid to save money and spruce up their home. B&Q, amongst other retailers, are the first to witness this. Their website now contains how to guides and they even run classes to ensure that people can do their DIY projects more safely. Bank Holidays are the most popular time for people who want to spruce up their home, with free time ensuring that those little projects get done. Consumers are now looking at their homes differently. Before, if there was a feature of their property they didn't like, they'd be tempted to move. But as the housing market is sluggish at best, this is simply not an option as it once was. Instead, consumers are choosing to €˜make do and mend'. The €˜make do and mend' attitude comes from the period when Britain was at war with Germany. Back then, people were on rations and had to make sure things lasted a lot longer. The recession has seen an interest in this attitude, with many consumers learning how to sew, make clothing and cook using left overs. This begs the question- has the recession been good for us? Instead of being materialistic and moving home once we're bored or fed up with the house, have we now realised the errors of our ways, turning to more wholesome activities? What are €˜wholesome' activities? Only time will tell, until then, retailers like B&Q are laughing!
