Tweeters and social networking lovers in the work place are costing businesses £1.38 billion a year, according to research by IT group Morse. Half of those surveyed spent on average 40 minutes a week on the social networking sites. Companies often do not have a policy on whether social networking sites are allowed in the work place or not, therefore leaving some confusing amogst employees. Morse has said that there is a productivity 'strain' on companies due to the use of social networking sites. Not only this but companies need to be careful about what employees post on social networking sites. Social networking sites have really become popular over the last few years and some companies have not had a chance to catch up yet. Personally, I think that logging onto social networking sites during lunch breaks is acceptable. However, companies need to set clear procedures as to what employees can and cannot say on sites regarding the company itself. Social networking sites are very influential on people regarding branding and products. Companies need to create policies regarding social networking use in order to ensure employees know whether they are allowed to access sites during work hours.
