Retail News- Organic food sales fall in recession

Many believe that organic food is the ultimate product in healthy eating. Organic food shops have sprung up all over the high street, promoting a healthier lifestyle and organic produce.

I have always been suspicious of ‘organic’ foods. For a start, what are my carrots if not organic? I hardly think they’re unorganic. Plus coupled with the food labelling laws in this country, the produce could have been outside for a second and be labelled organic.

However, The Daily Telegraph has found that the recession has seen the buying of organic produce fall as people try to save money.

I myself had the ‘organic or not’ conversation in the early days of the recession with my mum, as we were shopping in the supermarket. She picked up ‘organic’ veggies and I looked at the price ‘We’re in a recession now mum.’ I said, putting them back onto the shelf and picking up the somehow unorganic products.

It seems I am not alone. The Soil Associations Organic Market Report 2010 has shown that organic sales have dropped from £2.1 billion in 2008 to £1.84 billion in 2009.

So the organic bubble has burst. However, I am sure that once consumers have put the recession behind them, organic sales will yet again increase.

Retail News- Recession breeds employee loyalty

The word recessions strikes fear into many. Some picture repossessions of housing, some unemployment and others tighten their purse strings. What many don’t realise is the recession actually increases loyalty from employees.

A survey by Kelly Services found that amongst retail employees, the recession generated a powerful sense of engagement between workers and bosses. More than a quarter of retail employees stated they are now more loyal to bosses due to the recession.

The loyalty is due to greater communication between bosses and employees and a trend towards positive management. Morale amongst retail staff is also higher than expected.

Employees feel more valued because of the recession and are therefore happier at work. The emphasis during the recession is now on teamwork and achievement through this.

Whilst many would expect loyalty to decrease in times of recession, in actual fact workplaces pulled together in order to keep morale high and make the company a more affective workplace.

Retail News- Tesco Sells Solar Panels

Tesco is to start selling Solar Panels this week in a bid to help people become more eco friendly.

Other retailers such as Sainsburys and B&Q already sell the panels, which will help homes to reduce their carbon emissions.

However, critics have stated that Tesco is only selling the panels in a bid to cash in. The government is to encourage people to be more environmentally friendly by paying homeowners and small firms for generating electricity by using wind turbines and solar panels.

Currently the majority of homes do not use either wind turbines or solar panels in order to generate electricity. The government is hoping to change this by giving homeowners the incentive to do so.

Personally I think anything which encourages people to be more envionmentally friendly, either by offering cash incentives or by making environmentally friendly products more readily available can only be a good thing as we tackle climate change.
