Many believe that organic food is the ultimate product in healthy eating. Organic food shops have sprung up all over the high street, promoting a healthier lifestyle and organic produce.
I have always been suspicious of ‘organic’ foods. For a start, what are my carrots if not organic? I hardly think they’re unorganic. Plus coupled with the food labelling laws in this country, the produce could have been outside for a second and be labelled organic.
However, The Daily Telegraph has found that the recession has seen the buying of organic produce fall as people try to save money.
I myself had the ‘organic or not’ conversation in the early days of the recession with my mum, as we were shopping in the supermarket. She picked up ‘organic’ veggies and I looked at the price ‘We’re in a recession now mum.’ I said, putting them back onto the shelf and picking up the somehow unorganic products.
It seems I am not alone. The Soil Associations Organic Market Report 2010 has shown that organic sales have dropped from £2.1 billion in 2008 to £1.84 billion in 2009.
So the organic bubble has burst. However, I am sure that once consumers have put the recession behind them, organic sales will yet again increase.
