The study, lead by Professor Philip Hannaford and the University of Aberdeen, found that women who took the contraceptive pill were more protected against types of Cancer and heart disease, as well as strokes.
46,000 women were studied over forty years to understand the effects the Pill may have. Women who stopped using the pill from five to nine years in the study had a slightly higher risk of dying among the under 45s.
However, the result also found these risks fell as women got older. The results were best seen in those who smoked, who had a high blood pressure or were at risk of heart disease.
Professor Hannaford told BBC Sctoland: "This study, after following up a large group of women for 39 years, has shown there is no increased risk among women who have used the pill, in fact there is a small 12% drop."
The results are to be published in the British Medical Journal.
