Company History

In 1923 Littlewoods Pools was founded by Sir John Moores and two friends, who handed out Littlewoods Football Pools coupons outside Manchester United's Old Trafford home ground. Moores bought his friends out and he and brother Cecil continued with the business.

The brothers used their network of pools agents and printing companies to establish themselves as a catalogue retailer from 1932 onwards.

During World War II Littlewoods turned into a parachute making operation when the brothers offered their building to the government.

1937 saw the first Littlewoods store open in Blackpool, and in 1985 the first Index store was opened.

In 1995 Index Extra was launched, Littlewoods first direct Catalogue store.

Littlewoods Leisure was sold to Rodime for £161 million in 1999

October 2001 saw Littlewoods become the owner of Swan electronics.

In 2002 Littlewoods investments buys Littlewoods from the Moores family for a staggering £750 million.

2003 saw Littlewoods being bought by Sir David and Frederick Barclay. They merged the companies of Littlewoods and arch rival Great Universal Stores.

March 2005 Littlewoods sold their Index stores to Argos after 18 years of no profits.

July 2005 Associated Foods bought 120 Littlewoods branches on behalf of Primark for £409 million.

October 2005, Littlewoods home shopping business merged with Shop Direct to form the UK's largest home shopping business. Their headquarters move to Manchester.

In March 2006, Littlewoods disappeared from the high street to concentrate on becoming an online retailer.

May 2008 Littlewoods Shop Direct Group announce it will change its corporate brand to Shop Direct Group.

In July 2008 Shop Direct Group buys Empire Stores.
