A History of Tesco

Tesco started in 1919, when Jack Cohen started selling surplus groceries from a stall in the East End of London. Cohen made a profit of £1 from sales of £4 on his first day.

In 1924 Cohen bought a shipment of tea from a Mr T.E Stockwell. The initials of both men combined to form the name Tesco.

1932 saw Tesco become a private limited company

In 1947 Tesco stores floated on the Stock Market with a shore price of 25p.

During the 1950 and 60s Tesco bought up rival shops including 70 Williams stores, 200 Harrow Stores, 97 Charles Phillips stores and Victor Value stores .

In 1968 Tesco opens its first Superstore in Crawley, West Sussex.
