J Hepworth and Son opened a Gentleman's Tailors established in Leeds in 1864
In 1981 Hepworth bought Kensalls and developed a womenswear group of shops called Next.
The first official Next store opened in February 1982. 70 stores were opened by July.
In August 1984- Next for men was launched. By December there were 52 shops.
1985 saw the launch of Next Interiors .
In 1986 J Hepworth and Son changed their name to Next PLC. This year also saw Next acquire Grattan.
Next Childrenswear was launched in 1987
Followed by Next Direct in 1988
In 1991 Next sold Grattan to Otto Versand.
By 1994 Next was trading in 300 stores in 16 countries
1999 saw next.co.uk is launch
