MP expense reforms announced

The proposals could include an end to mortgage payment claims, employing relatives and ‘golden goodbyes’ for MPs who are retiring.

However, MPs are not happy about the changes, some saying they are being penalised for being married or hiring family members. Some MPs want to vote on the changes which has led John Bercow, Speaker to insist MPs must not try to "block, neuter or minimise reform".

The expenses scandal has now ensured that over 100 MPs will step down at the next election due to their expenses claims.

However, the changes will only become law if adopted by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA), created after the expenses scandal. Even so, the changes will not be put into practice until after the next election.

Within parliament there are still questions and investigations regarding the use of expenses for mortgages which have already been paid off.
