George

George clothing is marketed as quality fashion at affordable prices. Walmart also sells the George brand in the US, Canada and Japan. The George label was named after George Davies, the founder of Next, who was George's original chief designer.

Asda Living Stores

In October 2003 Asda launched a new format called Asda Living. This was the companies first general merchandise store, containing all its non food ranges including clothing, home electronics, toys, homewears, health and beauty products. With these stores they have linked up with Compass Group, who operate the coffee shop Caffe Ritazza within some stores.

History

Asda began with the great entrepreneurial vision and drive of the companies founding fathers who pioneered the concept of one stop shopping in the UK.

Two branches of Asda can be traced in the 1920s.
The Asquith family had an original family business, a butchers shop in Knottingly, West Yorkshire. At the same time, a group of enterprising West Riding Dairy Farmers joined forces under the banner Hindells Dairy Farmers Ltd.

In 1949 the Hindells Dairy Farmers Ltd formed Associated Dairies and Farm Stores Ltd.

Associated Dairys created Craven Dairies in the 1960s. They met with the Asquith family and became the co founders of Asda.

In 1963 Asda converted a cinema to a self service supermarket. This was quickly followed by a second store. Both operated under the facia Queens.

In 1964- Asquiths offered their first discounted products by accident but this was an immediate hit

The first purpose built Asda was created in 1965.

In 1968 Asda acquired GEM stores, that year gaining massive profits.

Asda added petrol stations to its complexes in 1970

In 1978 The Asda southern expansion begins with the first supermarkets opening in Newport, Plymouth, Gosport and South Woodham Ferrers.

1985 saw Asda merge with Millard Furniture Industries (MFI)

But by 1987 Asda sells MFI due to lack of profits.

In 1989 the Asda George clothing brand is born

In 1999 Asda is acquired by American chain Wal Mart.

The first Asda Walmart supercentre opens at Patchway in 2000

In 2003 the first George stand alone store opens in Leeds

2005 saw Asda celebrate its 40th anniversary

In 2008 the stand alone George stores are shut, but the George clothing range continues to be sold in store at Asda

Asda Advertising Campaigns

Asda is known for two advertising campaigns. In the Asda Price campaign, customers tap their trouser pcket twice, producing a clinking sound as the coins that Asdas supposedly low prices have left in their pockets knock together.

In the smiley face ‘rollback' campaign, a CGI smiley face bounces from price tag to price tag knocking them down as customer watch.
